In addition, the antique-cut cushion shape and color zoning add a sense of mystery that will leave you spellbound. Harshil Zaveri, Founder & CEO. Gemstone & Variety: Natural Blue Sapphire.

Geographic Origin: Kashmir - India. Gemologist's Comments on Geographic Origin: Discovered in 1881 in the Zanskar range of the Himalayan mountains in northwest India, the legendary Kashmir sapphires are the most beautiful and treasured of all blue sapphires.

The finest sapphires from Kashmir have a highly saturated color, along with a characteristic "silkiness" or velvety glow that makes them a phenomenon of nature. With the original mines long depleted, Kashmir sapphires are a rare find and among the most prized of all gemstones today. Measurements (L x W x H): 9.53 x 7.38 x 5.94 mm. Intensity of Color: Vivid to Deep. Description of Color Award: The exceptionally rich azure blue color of this gem earns it the "Royal Blue" color award. Gemologist's Comments on Color: Moderate color zoning is seen in this gemstone. Color zoning, a common characteristic in gemstones, is when the color intensity or color purity is not uniform throughout the stone. Clarity description: The stone is completely free from eye-visible inclusions. Fluorescence is the visible light some gemstones emit when exposed to invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. We've described below the intensity and color of the gemstone's fluorescence under long-wave UV light (LWUV). Fluorescence Color: Yellow in Zone. Velvety Appearance: This gemstone exhibits an appearance that is classified as "velvety". Such an appearance results from very fine microscopic particles that scatter light, causing the coveted visual effect without negatively affecting the gem's transparency.

Gemstones with a velvety appearance have little to no extinction, display a warm glow, and look very pleasing to the eye. Therefore, velvety appearance is considered a highly sought-after trait in gemstones.

The most prominent examples of gemstones coveted for their velvety appearance are the legendary Kashmir sapphires. This item is accompanied by the following gemological report. Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF report # 114477. The accompanying SSEF report authenticates this gemstone as a "Natural Sapphire" of "Kashmir" origin with "No indications of heating" and describes the color as "blue of medium strong saturation". In addition, the special letter associated to the SSEF report states the approximate age of this sapphire as "23 million years", which is in agreement with the age of sapphire formation in the Himalayan mountains in Kashmir (India).
